Alcohol

Alcohol is still a drug, all be it a legal drug. Serious problems can come about from alcohol abuse. A lot of college students aren't aware of what constitutes as alcohol abuse or at what point a person should be seeking help or looking to alter their consumption habits. Are you trying to solve the problems in your life by drinking? Do you find you need a drink to relax? Are you drinking alone or experiencing blackouts of the times when you do drink? These are just a few questions to consider.

So why is alcohol such a big deal? Good question. I mean, it is legal, right? Regardless, there are very serious side effects of drinking alcohol. Some of the short term effects may not seem so bad; drowsiness, slurred speech, altered balance, a loss of inhibitions. However, the short term effects can also be less desirable; shakiness, nausea, memory loss. These are commonly referred to as a hangover, but did you know that what you are feeling is actually your body going through withdrawal?

With prolonged or heavy usage, there are also some serious long-term effects like stomach ulcers, liver function problems, brain damage, and sexual problems. Above that, alcohol abuse can become damaging to relationships, your finances, your college performance, and your potential future career.

Before you or someone you know is in a harmful situation, take some time to find out more about alcohol and what it does to your body, physically, emotionally, and mentally and what you can do for help.
